New York Giants GM Joe Schoen expects to return in 2025

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen held his annual bye week press conference on Tuesday and answered the question most attendees wanted answered.

Will he be back as GM in 2025?

“Yes,” Schoen said quickly and confidently. “I constantly communicate with the owners. I know that every time these questions come up, (head coach Brian Daboll) talks about them all the time. We have a really good relationship with the owners… there’s confidence in the plan and the direction we’re going.”

At the same time, Schoen admitted that the season so far had been disappointing.

“Obviously we’re 2-8 here. Not where we want to be, nobody is happy about it,” he said, before reminding everyone that there are still seven games left.

However, Schoen believes in the plan and the process and said the team is “not far off” and “we have the players in the building that can do it.”

When asked about someone to blame for the defeat, Schoen declined to go into details.

“It's about execution,” he said, then reminded everyone that the Giants are 1-5 in one-score games and that their red zone woes (they're last in the league in that category) reflect that harmed the team.

Schoen didn't want to talk much about individual players, but praised many of the younger players, especially his 2024 draft class.

“I’m happy about the young players we have. The structure is sometimes difficult as you go through it, but you have to go through it to get to the other side. There are some young pieces here. We’re not far away,” he said.

That could be true. The Giants have lost six games that could be considered winnable, including the one-score games Schoen alluded to.

Next year he will serve as general manager for the fourth time. To say the heat is turned up might be an understatement.
