Dan Quinn was pleased with the play of his offensive line on Sunday.
That's no surprise considering the Commanders' line attacked the Titans all day long, racking up 267 rushing yards on 45 running carries.
On Sunday, the Commanders were without right tackle Andrew Wylie, who suffered a concussion in last week's home loss to the Cowboys. Trent Scott had played as Wylie's replacement against the Cowboys.
However, in this game against the Titans, the Commanders selected Lucas as their starting right tackle. Not only did he start, but he played in every offensive snap, all 83 of them.
“Yes, and before you mentioned him, he was one of the first [people] “I wanted to talk to Lucas,” Quinn said. Therefore, he played predominantly as a left winger for most of the season. So this week in training for him to put in extra work after practice, before practice [T/G] Sam Cosmi. You could see this was a player who really invested in the details to get it right.”
Lucas had played as a left winger so far this season. He started early and traded time with rookie Brandon Coleman. But as the week progressed, he put in extra work to prepare to play the right tackle spot.
“Now when I moved to another side, that part was going to be a big deal because he himself did the extra bit with Sam. “I want more combinations, I want more takeaway stuff.” So they did a really good job of staying on the blocks and getting to the next level, and the tight ends played a big role in that as well.
Maybe the commanders can get Wylie back healthy when the bye week finally arrives. They also now know that their swing tackle Lucas is fit and ready to play both tackle positions.
