FRISCO, Texas – Dallas Cowboys Owner and CEO Jerry Jones answers questions about whether head coach Mike McCarthy has lost the locker room or not with a 3-7 start to 2024. That means speculation is growing about who Jones' next Cowboys head coach might be with McCarthy and his staff in the final year of their contracts.
The Cowboys are in the midst of a five-game losing streak and their 3-7 start is their worst 10-game start of the McCarthy era. They also opened 3-7 at quarterback in 2020 Dak Prescott was sidelined with a broken ankle. Prescott is out again this season after undergoing surgery to repair an injured hamstring.
Among the names floating around the football world as Dallas' new head coach – should McCarthy not be renewed – are former Cowboys Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, currently head coach at the University of Colorado. Sanders was last seen with Dallas He was on the 1995 title team and earned both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors in each of his five years with the Cowboys. Current Dallas defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer was Sanders' defensive coach for all five seasons and remains a close friend of Sanders to this day.
On Tuesday, Zimmer gave a little insight into Sanders' stance on his current position and whether or not he would consider returning to the United States as head coach.
“Deion and I are obviously really good friends and we probably talk weekly, but I'm not going to speculate about any jobs or anything like that because I don't think that's right,” Zimmer said. “I know he's told me many times that he's really happy in Colorado from where he is.”
Sanders himself was asked about it coaching buzz on Tuesday, and he echoed what Zimmer said by expressing his excitement about his current job at Colorado.
“I'm happy where I am, I'm doing well. I went down a boner,” Sanders said. via DNVR Buffson Tuesday. “I'm rested, I'm fine, I'm happy, I'm excited, I'm excited about where I'm at. I love it here. I really do.”
