Houston Texans trainer DeMeco Ryans was pleased with the team's response in practice this week after a 32-27 defeat against the Tennessee Titans.
That mentality needs to carry over from Thursday's off day to Sunday's showdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars EverBank Stadium this weekend.
“Our boys really attacked this week. They attacked with the right attitude,” Ryans said Wednesday. “I’m just on the practice field today. The boys are involved and know exactly what we are doing. They fly around. The energy is up so I'm happy to see how we came out to practice today. This is great proof that we had a really great week.”
The Texans, who have lost in four of the last five contests, can't clinch a division title with a win over Jacksonville this weekend, but they can ruin the rest of the season for Jaguars fans. Jacksonville would be eliminated from the AFC South Division title with a win.
The Jaguars would also be eliminated from any playoff discussions with wins by the Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos over the Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns.
Depending on the upcoming week of practice, a quarterback change could be in the works for Jacksonville (2-9). Trevor Lawrence returned to practice for the first time since suffering a shoulder injury in Week 9 and is expected to be a game-time decision.
Unless Lawrence is cleared by the medical staff to return, Jacksonville will be back to playing Mac Jones for the third straight season.
“We look forward to competing against whoever starts at quarterback for them. This week is really not about the Jags. It's all about the Texans, so whoever goes out there really has no influence on what we do. We just try to implement and play our style of football. Play the best we can and that’s all.”
Here are some of the highlights from Ryans' press conference on Wednesday.
On how he thinks they have managed to build a good team around CJ Stroud

“We have a really good team. I don't know where the story is going, but we're a really good team and when we play well and finish, we're a good team. We have the guys we need to go out and win games. We miss some people, but that's all NFL teams. You’re going to miss a few guys here or there because of injuries and things like that, but you keep going and you keep fighting every week and that’s what our guys did.”
I wonder if this game has any special significance leading up to the bye week

“It is important that it is our next game. I don't know how you attach special importance to a game. Every game is important and that doesn't change. Every time I step in front of our team, every game is important. That doesn't change just because we lost, it's more important. If we win, they are just as important. Every game is important and of course you want to win as many as possible by playing the game correctly.”
About what things he wants to see from his team that he wants to take into the bye week

“For me it’s all about Sunday. I want our boys to just go out and play clean football. Eliminate the self-inflicted negative plays and if we do that then that's all I want to see. This gives us a chance to really compete and see where we stand. Too often in games that don't go our way, it's all about us and things we can control. My message to our boys is to focus intently on the things we can control. If we do that and get out of our own way, we can fully focus on the opponent and focus on beating the opponent instead of beating ourselves.”
Whether the defense changes with S Jalen Pitre out

“Jalen is a very unique player. Jalen has done a lot for us defensively and here too we will use our guys the way we need to use them. It doesn't change everything we're going to do. They’re going to miss the dynamic playmaking ability of Jalen because he’s such an impactful player.”
Indicates whether there is a topic with negative games and when they occur

“Negative games happen. They talk about technique, poor eye discipline and poor penalty decision making. It's severely lacking – perhaps it's due to a lack of focus in certain areas. It's just a lot of different things and different people making certain mistakes and that doesn't change in football. That's it. Guys make mistakes all the time and no one is perfect. I make sure our guys know that no one is going to be perfect, but it's all about making progress on the things you can control, like eye discipline and decision making. You can control these things. So if you can control those things, then that puts you in a position to make a play or help the team make a play. When your eyes are off, you're not listening, or you've missed a call or a check. These are things that are unacceptable to me.”
On what S Jimmie Ward brings to the nickel role

“Jimmie has played a lot of spots for us and Jimmie is a versatile player. He played in the back end. He can play all over the back and we'll see where Jimmie goes on Sunday and he's been a good playmaker for us. Wherever he lines up, it will be dynamic and he will make some plays. He flies around and has a hive mentality, so wherever we take him he’ll do just that.”
About how difficult it is for opposing quarterbacks to deal with the pass-rush duo of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter

“Our rushing duo is really causing havoc. I think it's really tough on opposing quarterbacks, and we see that in how teams try to chip away at protecting us and slowing down our guys. This just shows how much respect they have when the coordinators prepare. You need to make sure they block the edges and keep the edges blocked. Our guys are still doing a great job of finding a way to put pressure on the quarterback and take him down.”
Are there any experiences he has had in the past that he has relied on during this difficult period?

“No, for me everything is organic with our team and I have a good overview of our team and know where we are and what we need. I’ll make sure I run this mansion.”
