Darren Rizzi is the only head coach of the New Orleans Saints other than Sean Payton . The second win tied him with Aaron Kromer for the second-most wins by an interim Saints coach. The only one with more wins is Joe Vitt, who took over Kromer's position after six games.
The big difference between Rizzi, Kromer and Vitt is the situations they inherited. Kromer and Vitt were interim coaches because Payton was suspended for a year. Last year's team had a 13-3 record and is one of the best teams in franchise history. Did we mention that Drew Brees was still the quarterback?
This was a thriving team that lost its head coach all season. Midway through the year, Rizzi faced a team that had just lost seven games. These were completely different circumstances, to say the least.
Unless there is a complete explosion, Rizzi will finish the year with more wins than Kromer. To surpass Vitt's record of five wins, New Orleans will need to beat the Rams, Packers, Commanders or Buccaneers in addition to the easier games on the schedule.
Rizzi started his run strong, but how it ends will determine how the Rizzi era is remembered.
