As the regular season nears its end, conversations about the offseason, free agency and the upcoming draft will continue to crop up.
In The Athletic's Dane Brugler he lets the Chargers select Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson with the No. 25 overall pick.
Here's what Brugler said about sending Johnson to Los Angeles:
Jeanty deserves every bit of praise, but he's not the only running back in this class with first-round consideration. Johnson is a well-rounded athlete who possesses equal amounts of strength, patience and speed when running. Add to that the fact that he doesn't fumble and is reliable in passing on mistakes, and you don't have to squint to see why Jim Harbaugh might go in that direction.
For some Chargers fans, it might make sense to ignore other positions of need and take a running back in the first round.
But look at who the team's head coach is. Jim Harbaugh has made it clear that he wants to be a line-of-scrimmage team and break down opposing defenses on the ground.
The status of the running back room remains unclear. JK Dobbins is currently injured and expected to become a free agent. Gus Edwards will still be under contract but has not yet proven himself as a three-down back.
Johnson finished the 2024 regular season with 1,537 rushing yards and 23 total touchdowns. Standing at 6'3″ and weighing 220 pounds, he is a versatile defender who demonstrates determination as a runner, technically sound footwork and advantages in the passing game as both a blocker and a receiver.
