The San Francisco 49ers announced Friday that wide receiver Ronnie Bell has been released.
Bell was selected in the seventh round of the 2023 draft and has struggled to carve out a regular role in a crowded 49ers WR corps.
He played in nine games this season, contributing primarily on special teams. Bell caught two passes for 22 yards on six targets this season. As a rookie, he had six receptions for 68 yards and three touchdowns.
Bell also contributed as a punt returner in his first year, but was overshadowed at the position by rookies Jacob Cowing and Ricky Pearsall.
The 49ers are getting healthier at WR, which made Bell expendable. Pearsall is joined by Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings at the top of the depth chart. Chris Conley and Jacob Cowing contribute on special teams. If there are injuries elsewhere, the club can use its squad space to help in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
Bell drew the ire of 49ers fans after suffering a key loss in the 49ers' Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He could potentially be a practice squad addition if he clears waivers.
