Analysis: It is wise for Barcelona to pursue the possible signing of Mohamed Salah?

There is no doubt that Barcelona will begin to finalize their targets for next summer's transfer window and, given their ongoing financial problems, the free agent market will be closely monitored by the club's sporting department, led by sporting director Deco.

Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah has been mentioned as a possible free agent option, while fellow German Joshua Kimmich also continues to be linked with a move to Catalonia. However, perhaps the most high-profile player Barcelona could sign is Mohamed Salah.

Salah has made an incredible start to the 2024-25 season and his performances are a big reason why Liverpool currently sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League. He has scored eight goals and provided six assists in the league, but taking all competitions into account, the Egyptian superstar's total is ten each.

There is no doubt that Salah is adored by the red half of Merseyside, but that may not stop him from leaving at the end of the season. His contract expires next June and for now there is no agreement on an extension – similar to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is being closely followed by Real Madrid.

According to Fichajes (via ), Barcelona is one of the clubs considering a move for Salah if he becomes a free agent next summer. Joan Laporta is seen as the driving force behind these agreements as he sees the 32-year-old as an important signing.

Salah is undoubtedly a world-class player and he has proven that over the last seven years at Liverpool. However, there is a strong case to be made that Barcelona simply don't need him, and given the club's precarious financial situation, signing him wouldn't be a good idea.

Salah's natural position is on the right wing, and if he were to join that he would have to be a regular starter – otherwise he would be wasted. However, this would certainly not be the case as Barcelona already have Lamine Yamal (and Raphinha, who acts as a backup in that position despite regularly playing on the left).

It would certainly be stupid if Lamine Yamal's development was slowed down by a player 15 years older than him. Barcelona should be aware of this and considering his expected wage demands, their interest is likely to end fairly quickly.

There are new signings to be made next summer, but Salah is unlikely to be one of them. Simply put, it wouldn't be a good idea even if the club didn't have financial problems.
