Premier League returns: Five talking points for English top-flight weekend

Liverpool are flying under Arne Slot and sit at the top of the Premier League and Champions League, having dropped points in just two games this season.

They are five points ahead of Manchester City, who have lost four games in a row in all competitions – something Pep Guardiola had never experienced before in his coaching career (excluding penalties).

However, despite their recent run and speculation about the Spaniard's future, Guardiola this week agreed to a new one-year contract to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium to 10 years.

It is a timely boost for City, who face another potentially difficult game at home to Tottenham on Saturday (17:30 GMT) to avoid five straight defeats.

This is the sixth time a team has been five points ahead after 11 games – the first five have all been champions.

But City have won the last four Premier League titles and have been more than five points behind the leaders at times in each of those seasons.

Liverpool and City have a Premier League game each before they meet in a potential blockbuster at Anfield on Sunday December 1st.

Arsenal, who have finished second in each of the last two seasons, are four points behind – level with Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Brighton.

The Gunners and Forest meet at the Emirates on Saturday at 3pm GMT.
