Tempers erupted on the San Francisco 49ers sidelines during the team's 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
After kicker Jake Moody missed his third kick, wide receiver Deebo Samuel had a few words to the 49ers' second-year kicker. Long snapper Taybor Pepper wasn't happy with what Samuel had to say and got in the receiver's face. Samuel responded by punching Pepper in the throat.
There was more shouting between the two players, but no further physical escalation.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan was unaffected by the incident in his press conference after the 49ers' win.
“I don’t have much of a clue because I haven’t seen any of it,” Shanahan said. “I was just told about it – but it was probably obvious, the boys were frustrated and probably something happened and brothers are fighting a bit, as you know. I didn't see any of it so I don't know how bad it was, but something I'm not too worried about, we'll fix it. If it hasn’t been fixed yet, we’ll fix it on the plane and get back to loving each other tomorrow.”
Samuel had similar feelings after the game, which the 49ers won thanks to a 44-yard walk-off field goal by Moody.
“Nothing, to be honestsaid Samuel. “Just frustrated in the heat of the moment. It was a close game and I got a little out of character. But I’ll talk to Moody and we’ll get over it.”
Samuel and Pepper both admitted that Samuel didn't say anything out of the ordinary to Moody, and Pepper said his only goal was to stick up for his kicker.
“Simply a highly emotional gamePepper said. “Football is full of emotions and Jake had a bit of a difficult phase there. I only stood up for Jake because there was still time on the clock. The game wasn't over yet and everyone knows what happened in the end.
“It's not over until the clock shows zero. They count all three if it's a field goal. And I always got four (Moody’s) back.”
Ultimately, there were no ill effects for Moody. As time expired, he scored the winning goal with a 44-yard play and helped the 49ers win. He said he was not concerned about the incident.
“Like I said, it happens in the heat of the moment,” Moody said. “I have to do those kicks at the end of the day, so that’s all I’m focused on. I don’t worry about anything like that.”
It's understandable if frustration increased. Temperatures were near 80 degrees at kickoff in Tampa Bay, and the 49ers were in the midst of a potential collapse of an all-important game. The team also endured a string of frustrating defeats in 2024, and this was poised to become another one.
Chances are good that this particular incident will not last any longer. The bigger issue for the 49ers will be avoiding more instances where players on the sideline have cause for frustration.
