Australia vs India Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul put tourists in dominant position in first Test

On the first day, India were reduced to 59-5 with the new ball and Australia were 59-7, and this phase was always crucial against a weak Indian line-up.

The brilliant partnership between Jaiswal and Rahul was superbly judged and timed and has pushed some of these questions to the back burner for now.

They soaked up the pressure against the new ball and during some excellent Hazlewood play after tea, but also scored more freely when the bowling allowed.

Rahul was tenacious, scoring just four boundaries, while we saw some of Jaiswal's flair, especially after he brought up his half-century off 123 balls – his slowest in Test cricket so far.

He bowled a superb six-over square leg to Starc before smashing off-spinner Nathan Lyon for a 100-yard six.

The 22-year-old also showed his character by pushing Starc over his pace as India made it 72-0.

Starc had exchanged facetious words with Indian seamer Nitish Rana and said, “I bowl faster than you, I have a long memory” after fending off a bouncer while batting.

Jaiswal said to left-arm seamer Starc, “It's coming too slowly,” to which he managed a smirk.

Former Australian batsman Mike Hussey was effusive in his praise for Jaiswal, saying: “I wanted to see him on bouncy pitches in Australia to see how he copes, but this innings shows he can handle any conditions on the pitch the whole world.
