Michael Burgess Warwickshire wicketkeeper ends playing career

Burgess made 745 runs, including two centuries, in this summer's County Championship as Warwickshire finished seventh in Division One.

“We have spoken to Michael regularly since he first spoke to us about it. We wanted to make sure it was the right decision for him and whether there was something we could do as a club. “But in the end we agreed to release him from the final year of his contract,” said performance director Gavin Larsen.

“What I liked about Michael was his fighting spirit and his tenacity with the bat in challenging situations. I lost count of how many times he saved a championship innings by batting superbly with his tail.”

“He is a gifted wicket-keeper who has always shown the ability to deliver a first-class performance behind the stumps. There is no doubt that we will miss his all-round abilities.”

Meanwhile, former Warwickshire fast bowler Liam Norwell was forced to retire at the age of 32 due to medical reasons.

He scored a heroic career best of 9-62 against Hampshire on the final day of the 2022 County Championship, enabling the Bears to retain their top flight status.

But that was to be his last first-class game and although he made three appearances in the second eleven that summer, he was released by the club at the end of the season.
