Morning Report: Tom Aspinall praises Michael Chandler, but ‘he’s got to be one of the most frustrating people to coach’

likes to watch to fight, even if he feels the lightweight contender's entertaining performances usually come at his expense.

Chandler meets at this Saturday in a rematch of theirs Thriller, which Oliveira won by TKO in the second round and secured a vacant lightweight title. Sitting in the cage seat will be Aspinall, the UFC's interim heavyweight champion, and he's looking forward to getting a closer look at the headliners And he'll be just as excited about the five-round co-main event.

In particular, he's looking forward to Chandler foregoing strategy, as he often does, and instead satisfying the audience.

“I think Mike Chandler in particular is one of the most frustrating coaches of all time,” Aspinall told TNT Sports. “Because when he fights, tactics just completely go out the window and he just keeps going. He’s basically having a street fight with gloves on, it’s amazing to watch.”

Chandler has been a bonus machine since moving from Bellator to UFC in 2021, earning an additional five-figure check in all but one of his five UFC appearances. His encounter in 2021 with a unanimous decision loss, was .

In Bellator, Chandler won the 155-pound title three times, and while there were hints of the berserker style he would later fully adopt, he often had more intellectual game plans. Given that Chandler's mindset has won over legions of fans, Aspinall understands why he fights the way he does.

“He just fights with pure aggression and athleticism,” Aspinall said. “Of course he's very technical, but he chooses not to use that in a way, but sometimes I love technology. I love the finesse of fighting, but sometimes, like everyone else, I just enjoy watching a good fight. So this guy is entertainment every time.”

Facing Chandler again is Oliveira, a former lightweight champion. “Do Bronx” is one of the strongest finishers in UFC history and owns the most submissions by an Octagon fighter at 16 years old. His first fight with Chandler was unforgettable and Aspinall feels privileged to have witnessed the rematch first hand.

“Put these two guys in,” Aspinall said. “You close the octagonal doors, ring the bell and it’s absolute chaos. That’s why I’m looking forward to being in the cage.”
