The Country Music Association (CMA) Awards were indeed a “big show” on Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee, as AEW's Paul Wight made a surprise appearance.
Dressed as his Captain Insano character from the 1998 Adam Sandler film “The Waterboy,” Wight appeared on stage during Bailey Zimmerman's performance of “New to Country.”
Wight was part of the set, standing next to a beer ping pong table. Zimmerman climbed onto his shoulders at the end of the song as the two walked around.
It is unknown if there is a connection between Wight and Zimmerman and what was the trigger for having him in his Insano outfit. He wanted to bring the character into AEW and actually appeared as the character once in a backstage segment.
Wight, who last served on the Jericho cruise in January, said as recently as last September: He hopes to return to the ring “very soon.”” after recovering from partial knee replacement surgery. The 52-year-old has set his sights on February's Grand Slam in Brisbane, Australia, as a show he would like to take part in and said his next run will be the last of his long career.
