The Miami Dolphins have spent nearly three seasons developing 2022 seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson, but it appears they are throwing in the towel.
On Monday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that the team is turning to Tyler Huntley to replace Tua Tagovailoa. This moves Thompson to third on the depth chart, meaning his spot on the 53-man roster is tenuous at best.
While Miami had three quarterbacks for much of this season, including the loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 13, the Dolphins started the year with just two quarterbacks on the active roster. As long as Tagovailoa and a backup player are both healthy, the team will likely save roster space by retaining just a pair of passers.
Assuming Thompson clears waivers, he is a logical candidate to remain on the practice squad. But will he ever see the Dolphins' active roster again? Probably not.
The Dolphins have now had three years of evidence that Thompson is not a player they can trust to get into the lineup when needed. I even trusted the quarterback to hand the ball off in the fourth quarter of a blowout win against the New England Patriots for the team.
The team's decision to turn to Huntley later speaks volumes. And it's hard to imagine Miami having any interest in having Thompson as a backup in 2025 and beyond.
In three years with the Dolphins, Thompson has one touchdown and three interceptions in 10 regular-season games. He also made one playoff start, finishing with a touchdown and two picks. It would be a surprise if Miami ever had Thompson in its lineup again.
