Is 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan on the hot seat?

A former Washington Redskins offensive coordinator is said to be in the hot seat.

On Sunday, the Seattle Seahawks raced down the field and defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the final seconds of the game, dropping the 49ers to 5-5 on the season.

A few hours later, SI 49ers editor Grant Cohn tweeted: “If the 49ers miss the playoffs, they should shoot Kyle Shanahan. Period.”

There was a lot of excitement on Twitter on Sunday night as 49er fans expressed their general disappointment with this year's team. In particular, many expressed that they wouldn't mind if Shanahan wasn't San Francisco's coach next season. That was put quite nicely, by the way.

Many tweet things they shouldn't, are mean, unfair and frankly hateful towards Shanahan. Yes, they are exercising their First Amendment right to express their opinions. But don't they also show how unfair and unfriendly they are as people?

Yes, the 49ers are struggling, and yes, injuries have been a big problem. They are a reality.

If Shanahan's team doesn't make the playoffs in 2024, changes will be made. However, that doesn't necessarily mean the change made will be head coach. You could decide to make personnel changes.

And yes, they could fire Kyle Shanahan. However, the 49ers could still win the NFC West, where the Cardinals lead at 6-4 and the 49ers, Rams and Seahawks are tied at 5-5.

Shanahan was the Redskins' offensive coordinator during the 2010-2013 season. He was subsequently fired along with head coach Mike Shanahan, Matt LaFleur and others after a terrible 3-13 season in 2013 when Robert Griffin refused to take over the offense that Kyle had planned for him in 2012, which was Griffin's only season in the NFL brought success.

Shanahan was the offensive coordinator of the Houston Texans during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. After Washington, he was the offensive coordinator of the Browns in 2014 and the Falcons in 2015 and 2016 before becoming head coach of the 49ers for the 2017 season.
